Aww, Ladies Having Crushes. </3

But that's not really what the blog title about. It's about this:

We’re at strip #1917, and in the year 1917, Jeannette Rankin of Montana became the first woman in the US Congress, elected to the House of Representatives. She was a pacifist, and shortly after her first term began, she voted against US involvement in WWI, saying “I felt the first time the first woman had a chance to say no to war, she should say it.”

I’ll quote her this as well, considering the first eight words: “If I am remembered for no other act, I want to be remembered as the only woman who ever voted to give women the right to vote.

And check this out: she passed away from natural causes at the ripe old age of 93 in 1973 in Carmel, California (excellent choice!), but she had been considering RUNNING AGAIN for a seat in the House to protest the Vietnam War. That is one peace-filled, wonderful old lady.

If you have a moment, please read about her here (or elsewhere - I’m sure this Wikipedia entry barely scratches the surface). I’m glad I stumbled upon her name for today’s little history spotlight. Lady’s a damn inspiration. :)
